Open House to display our 25 year old Time Capsule - Wednesday, May 16th - 4 to 6 PM

Welcome to Powell Elementary School!

"Where kids leave smarter at the end of every day!"

Principal:  Reba Lane              Assistant Principal:  Karen Frost

The mission of Powell Elementary School is to provide a safe, nurturing learning environment that holds high expectations for all students to become independent, responsible, life-long learners and productive citizens.

OPENING THE TIME CAPSULE

25 years ago, the students and staff of Powell Elementary prepared a Time Capsule with the intent for it to be opened in 2011/12.  Well, the day has arrived and we will be opening the capsule and sharing what is inside on Wednesday, May 16th, for all to see.  The students have been working on their own submissions for our NEW time capsule, which will be buried sometime this summer.

There will be an in-school presentation with special invited guests (PES staff and administration from 1986) at 9:00 AM that morning and will be broadcast over our school's tv station; then the general public is invited to come to the gym between 4 and 6 PM that same day to view the contents of both the old and the future time capsules.  The contents of the old capsule will be displayed in a special case outside of Student Affairs for some time to come.

Many of our parents today were students when the time capsule was buried in 1986, so we hope you will come by and check out the capsule contents at 4 PM on May 16th!  WBIR will be covering it, as will the Powell Shopper and the Knoxville News Sentinel. Should be a fun day for everyone!!!

  DO UNTO OTTERS...

Parents, our theme this year at Powell Elementary School is otters!  As part of that theme, Mrs. Hightower (our
school Counselor) is reading the book "Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners" by Laurie Keller to each class.

You may see and hear a lot about otters this year!  We have bulletin boards about otters, staff have t-shirts with
our theme...otters are EVERYWHERE!  Parents can join the fun by talking to their students about things they
"otter" do, such as school work or showing their manners.  Maybe even a fun visit to the zoo to see the otters or
perhaps reading some books together to learn about otters would help bridge that school/home learning
experience.  Stay tuned for more otter news!
.........THIS 'OTTER' BE A GREAT YEAR!........

Engage, Inspire, Educate, Achieve!

Storybird.com is a great website for kids to visit to create their own stories using a preset collection of art.  Parents will need to make an account using their e-mail to sign up, then children can use their imaginations and have a great time!

There is no cost and it is a safe site that allows no interactive conversation.  It does promote collaboration with others in the process of storytelling!

Be sure to read about Storybird and let your child's imagination soar!
